Cowley Road improvements

We’re working to create a new, segregated cycle track and separate footway along Cowley Road. The path will have priority at side-roads and new crossings to the business parks.
The Cowley Road construction timeline has been extended due to unforeseen utility diversions that will be continuing into the new year. Communication ducting works are scheduled for before and after the festive period. To reduce disruption to businesses and the train station during this busy time, night-time working hours are being undertaken where possible.
We are working carefully around the area’s complex network of utilities, coordinating with providers to avoid service interruptions and ensure site safety. Current works include installing streetlight ducting along the western verge between St John’s Innovation Park and the A14 footbridge, expected to continue into early January, after which the area will be topsoiled and seeded.
Junction improvements are also underway to enhance safety and maintain traffic flow, with a phased approach ensuring access is maintained. Traffic lights are in place to safeguard both the public and our workforce, supported by on-site traffic management to minimise delays and preserve access to businesses.
Good progress continues in unaffected areas, with cycleway and swale construction advancing steadily, alongside drainage improvements ensuring usability year-round and safety enhancements at Anglian Water’s entrance near the A14 footbridge.
We understand the challenges these works may cause and appreciate your patience as we work to complete the project efficiently, with safety and minimising disruption as our priorities. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Work on the controlled crossing point north of St Johns Innovation Centre was completed in December, with work this month focusing on installing the fibre and electrical lines underneath the footpath. Temporary crossings with signed pedestrian routes are still in place for all users to maximise safety.

Route overview
The revised 5.5km greenway alignment would start on Cambridge Road in Waterbeach before using a new, off-road path along land behind Car Dyke Road. It would then continue along a new, off-road bridleway, through fields behind the A10 as far as Ely Road, where it would then continue through Milton village. From here it would use the Jane Coston Bridge over the A14 and join upgraded paths and cycle-tracks on Cowley Road on to Cambridge North railway station and the Chisholm Trail.
